기독교 사상가이자 시인ㆍ작가ㆍ비평가ㆍ영문학자. 아일랜드 벨파스트 출생. 9살 때 어머니 플로라 Flora 여사를 암으로 여읜 루이스는 기숙사가 딸린 학교들 몇 군데를 전전하다가, 커크패트릭 W. T. Kirkpatrick이라는 가정 교사에게로 보내졌는데, 엄격한 이성주의적 무신론자였던 그에게서 엄밀한 논리적 사고 훈련을 받았으며, 본래 성공회 배경을 가졌던 루이스는 이 무렵 확고한 무신론자가 되었으나, 1929년 회심했다. 옥스퍼드의 모들린 칼리지에서 강의(1925~1954)하다가, 1954년 케임브리지의 모들린 칼리지 교수로 부임하여 중세 및 르네상스 문학을 가르쳤다. 지은 책으로 『순전한 기독교』, 『스크루테이프의 편지』, 『고통의 문제』, 『예기치 못한 기쁨』, 『네 가지 사랑』, 『나니아 연대기』, 『기독교적 숙고』, 『천국과 지옥의 이혼』, 『헤아려 본 슬픔』, 『영광의 무게』, 『피고석의 하나님』 등이 있다. 『나니아 연대기』중 『마지막 전투』는 이 연대기를 대표하여 카네기 상을 수상했다.
