In this collection of sermons on 1 Corinthians 13, Jonathan Edwards shows that Christians are called to exemplify the great virtue of charity through their thoughts and actions. Edwards shows the nature and virtue of love as the distinguishing mark of a true Christian love, which manifests itself in preferring others before self.

위대한 청교도 신학자이자 철학자, 설교자, 인디언 원주민들의 선교사다. 코네티컷 주 이스트 윈저에서 목회자의 아들로 태어나 13세의 나이로 예일 대학에 입학, 1720년 17세 때 최우수 학생으로 졸업한다. 1721년 회심을 경험한 그는, 1722년 8월부터 뉴욕에 있는 장로교회의 목사로 사역을 시작하고, 1724-1726년까지 예일 대학의 개인교수를 역임한다. 에드워즈는 1726년 8월에 자신의 외조부인 솔로몬 스토다드가 목회하고 있던 노샘프턴 교회의 부목사로 부임해 사역하다가 1729년 외조부의 뒤를 이어 담임목사로 사역하게 된다. 이후 1750년에 성찬 참여 자격 논쟁으로 해임당하기까지 에드워즈는 두 차례에 걸친 영적 부흥과 대각성을 그의 목회지에서 경험하게 되고(1734-1735년에 일어난 코네티컷 강 골짜기 부흥과 1740-1742년에 일어난 1차 대각성 운동), 부흥과 대각성 운동의 변호자가 된다. 에드워즈는 1751년에 매사추세츠 주 스톡브리지에서 지역교회 목사 겸 인디언 선교사로 다시 사역을 시작했으며, 1758년에는 뉴저지 대학(프린스턴 대학 전신) 학장으로 청빙 받아 부임한다. 그러나 같은 해 3월 22일에, 천연두 예방접종의 부작용으로 안타깝게 죽음을 맞는다. 저서로는 『진노한 하나님의 손에 붙들린 죄인들』, 『영적 감정을 분별하라』, 『순전한 헌신』, 『놀라운 회심의 이야기』, 『신앙 감정론』, 『조나단 에드워즈가 본 천지창조의 목적』 등이 있다.
